Our client supports banking, insurance, and credit organizations with the analysis, enrichment, and management of legal, financial, asset-related, and behavioral data to help them manage client risk.

They asked us to redesign one of their core life-insurance applications using Mendix – starting with an MVP to deliver fast results, while laying out the groundwork for a modular and scalable platform that would eventually support a wider set of business tools.

1 / Key challenge and overview

As part of a full-scale modernization of its application ecosystem, the organization partnered with us for a long-term collaboration to rebuild and future-proof its business tools. The team selected Mendix as the core technology, aiming for rapid delivery and long-term scalability.

The first step was clear: develop an MVP for a highly specialized application used to track unclaimed life-insurance policies and locate beneficiaries. CBTW’s teams had to ramp up fast on this complex domain to deliver value from the start.

2 / Our approach

  • Mapping the Current State

We began by analyzing legacy architecture, workflow bottlenecks, investigation steps, and audit constraints. This gave us a clear understanding of what needed to change – and why.

  • Fast Ramp-Up in a Specialized Domain

The use case was niche, so we worked closely with subject-matter experts. Through real-life walkthroughs and documentation reviews, we translated operational logic into detailed user stories and testable requirements.

  • UX and Product Design as the Starting Point

We mapped out investigator journeys—intake to closure—and built wireframes and interactive screens. Feedback loops ensured the app met real needs without adding complexity.

  • Setting a Scalable Mendix Foundation

Our engineers designed the target Mendix architecture, including the domain model, system integrations, and security. The result: a shared foundation ready for future use cases.

  • A Compact, Business-Aligned Team

A lean squad – two Mendix developers and one CBTW Product Owner – worked closely with a proxy Product Owner on the client side. This setup kept decision-making close to the business.

  • Sprint-Based Development and Continuous Feedback

Build in iterations, validate often, and refine with data – not assumptions.

  • Building for Reuse and Expansion

We documented UI patterns, data modeling rules, and working methods between our teams to accelerate future Mendix apps with reusable components and shared standards.

3 / Benefits

  • A rebuilt application that supports investigators’ workflows and improves day-to-day case management
  • A modular architecture designed to consolidate multiple applications into a single, scalable platform
  • New features that weren’t possible in the legacy tool, with a user experience tailored to real-life usage
  • Design and engineering support that helped streamline the client’s new ERP configuration, factoring in both operational details and long-term business priorities

Low-code platforms change how teams build internal tools, test ideas, and modernize existing systems. Used well, they reduce backlog and speed up delivery. Used poorly, they create new risks. This article explains what low-code actually changes inside software teams — and where full-code development remains essential.
